Weapons and your anemic goth getup can only carry you so far in V Rising. Oftentimes, you’re going to have to rely on your spells or abilities to help carry you through or out of some lethal situations. Be it against bosses or some of the toughest mobs in the game (like that one annoying Belmont boy), your selection of the best spells in V Rising can determine the outcome of combat. So consider the following for your vampiric escapades.
Best Blood Spells
Blood Magic spells, as you can expect, focus letting you absorb some of the physical damage you deal. It’s not the best if you’re aiming to be a spellcaster build, but still handy in a pinch.
Sanguine Coil
- Unlock by slaying Baron du Bouchon the Sommelier
Sanguine Coil was nerfed long ago, but it’s still one of the most reliable ways to both tank a boss’ hits and deal damage.
If you pair it with Ward of the Damned (more on that later), it becomes a loop of sustainability that lets you power through most attacks.
Blood Fountain
- Unlock by slaying Christina the Sun Priestess
Blood Fountain is in a similar boat to Sanguin Coil but it affects a larger area and is more useful for when you’re with friends. With enough Jewels, you can even make it a cleansing spell with a speed buff. But don’t rely on that too much. Blood Fountain is mostly there to ensure you can sustain your DPS with constant healing.
Veil of Blood
You’re going to need a gap closer or at least an evasion spell and thankfully, the default Veil of Blood is already more than adequate. Its invincibility window is very generous at 2.2 seconds and further Jewel upgrades can make it a healing tool as well.
You can experiment around with other dash or travel spells, but you might find yourself going back to something simpler like Veil of Blood.
Blood Rage
- Unlock by slaying Rufus the Foreman
Blood Rage seems overkill when you pair it with the other Blood Magic spells above, but in later levels in V Rising, going full offensive can get you killed often.
So more sustain and defensiveness as far as the best spells in V Rising shouldn’t hurt. Your friends are also going to thank you for this one, it’s quite a huge damage buff.
Best Illusion Spells
Moving on to Illusion spells, we have a couple for consideration among the best spells in V Rising. Most Illusion spells inflict the two following effects:
- Weaken: 15 percent enemy damage reduction for 5s and 25 percent chance to gain Phantasm upon killing a weakened target.
- Phantasm: One percent spell cooldown reduction and two percent change to reset spell cooldown on cast. Stacks up to 10 times.
Those two effects alone make Illusion spells worth including in your selection.
Mist Trance
- Unlock by slaying Foulrot the Soultaker
Mist Trance is something you’ll want to replace your default counter with as it grants both Weaken and Phantasm. If you get lucky, you can keep spamming this spell for a couple of times. It’s great as a panic button and for controlling the flow of combat.
Spectral Guardian
- Unlock by slaying Terah the Geomancer
Ultimate Spells are mandatory and if you don’t want to worry about dying or damage, then the Spectral Guardian is one of your most comfortable spells.
You get a shield and a guardian in one cast though the cooldown is long. This one appears to have been made with boss fights in mind.
Best Unholy Spells
Unholy spells excel in rebuffing enemies with the Condemn status effect. This makes enemies receive more damage and will summon a minion if you kill the condemned target.
Corrupted Skull
- Unlock by slaying Nicholaus the Fallen
This spell is quite a handful with three effects. It damages the enemy, summons a minion for you, and applies Condemn, meaning more damage and more minions. If you’re fighting a boss with a lot of minions or multiple enemies, you might want to replace Sanguine Coil with this one.
Ward of the Damned
- Unlock by slaying Kriig the Undead General
You can either use this with Sanguine Coil or Corrupted Skull and the results are both fun and functional.
You can become immortal with the right timing and luck though it’s a bit of a mix against the toughest bosses. If anything, it’s one of the mandatory spells for a necromancer setup.
Best Chaos Spell
Chaos spells are excellent at damage over time with its Ignite status that burns targets. It’s not as handy as other spell types, but it has its uses for boss fights.
Power Surge
- Unlock by slaying Azariel the Sunbringer
You can’t say no to more buffs, and Power Surge is quite powerful especially if you want to augment your weapon damage even further. The Jewel upgrades also make it interesting and provide area damage or a cleansing effect for your character.
Best Frost Spell
Frost spells will slow your enemy down either with the Chill status or the more debilitating Freeze (which acts as a stun). Again, great for boss fights, and somewhat tactical if you want to escape.
Arctic Leap
- Unlock by slaying Terrorclaw the Ogre
It’s one big nuke spell that deals an explosion of magic damage. Great as an opener for boss fights and against groups of enemies. You also get to freeze them for six seconds, which is plenty of time for you to either summon minions or ensure that they don’t recover from your cold calculation.
