With the centennial of multiple battles of the “Great War, ” there appears to be renewed interest in World War I as a setting for video games. While DICE’s Battlefield 1 has garnered a lot of the attention, another WW1 FPS has garnered a loyal following from gamers. Verdun was originally released on PC in 2015 as a multiplayer squad based shooter. It then landed on PS4 August 3, 2016. Xbox One owners no longer have to feel left out as Blackmill Games has announced that Verdun will be headed to that console March 8, 2017.
In Verdun, gamers are thrust into many of the bloodiest battles along the Western front in the trenches of France and Belgium. Unlike Battlefield 1 which journeyed across many theaters of the Great War such as Gallipoli, Syria, and Russia, Verdun focuses solely on the years-long stalemates in Western Europe. Plenty of time is spent in the trenches and leading volleys of troops across no man’s land. Gamers also have the ability to call in artillery strikes to pound the opposition from a distance.

The horrors of the Western front are also recreated with the inclusion of gas attacks. Gamer’s must don gas masks that seriously impede your field of vision but save you from a horrendous and painful death. The timing of the battles typically pre-date the widespread introduction of tanks to the war so battles are decided the old-fashioned way, with rifles and pistols. Obscure real-world units wearing historically accurate uniforms and insignias is also a nice addition that shows an intricate love of the game’s subject matter.
With Verdun landing on a new platform Blackmill Games is offering gamers the chance to win one of 25 game keys for the title at launch. They only have to hit social media using the #fireupVerdun hashtag to have a chance to will a free copy of the game.
