Nearly three decades after its release, You Are Not Alone director Wayne Isham has spilled some steamy behind-the-scenes moments from the music video featuring Michael Jackson and his then-wife Lisa Marie Presley, days after her death. According to the director, those affectionate moments proved how much love the duo had for each other despite the disturbing speculations surrounding their marriage, deemed contractual by many.
In a new interview with People, the music video director, who worked with Michael on several of his songs, revealed that the electricity between the then-couple was all the proof he needed to know they had a real relationship.
Lisa Marie Presley Starred As The Leading Lady In Michael Jackson’s Hit
Wayne Isham explained how Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley were still newlyweds at the time of shooting the You Are Not Alone music video. The video starred the late songstress as the leading lady, while the legendary king of pop poured his soul into his lyrics, expressing his innermost feelings. Their demeanor throughout the filming reflected their status as newlyweds. He quipped:
“It was in that newlywed fun and humor and laughter and smiles that you can see. So it was all very positive. People have asked me this before, it’s like, ‘Is there a reality to their relationship, and what was going on there? It was all very fun. They had a great time and great relationship on the set, so the best I can reflect off of is that.”
Aside from their shared genuine affection and sense of humor, Michael and Lisa, who tied the knot a year prior in 1994, had a peculiar rhythm about them that made their filming experience more fun. The combination of humor, great spirits, laughter, playful innocence, and genuine affection played into their on-screen chemistry.
Sharing more behind-the-scene details, Wayne explained that he prevented the couple from taking breaks in between shoots due to the limited time. Hence, he let them do their thing naturally, completely ignoring the cameras. From shared laughter to having Lisa swim around the pool and to the edge, every moment wasn’t about filming. Rather, it showed two married people having a great time and giving off real reactions. In the end, Wayne resorted to cutting out the extra scenes and “picking those shots off.”
Overall, the You Are Not Alone music video turned out fine enough to impress Michael Jackson, Lisa Marie Presley, and the rest of the world, winning several awards.
