Virginia Gov. Spanberger Slammed After Announcing State’s First Director of Outdoor Recreation: ‘Another Pointless Government Job’

Is this a good idea?

Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger has recently announced the first-ever Director of Outdoor Recreation for the state. The announcement did not sit well with some folks, however, who complained that the Virginia governor was spending money on something that was not entirely useful, in their opinion.

Virginia is for outdoor lovers. And outdoor recreation isn’t just important to our quality of life — it’s important to our economy.

Spanberger revealed on social media that the first Director of Outdoor Recreation will be Heather Barrar. According to WDBJ, the department will focus on growing the local outdoor recreation economy while supporting local communities that rely on tourism. The goal is to develop an economic strategy based on feedback from local leaders and communities while preserving nature.

In her post, Spanberger said: “Virginia is for outdoor lovers. And outdoor recreation isn’t just important to our quality of life — it’s important to our economy.” Barrar promised a vision anchored in a Commonwealth where “conservation, recreation and economic development reinforce one another.”

Spanberger Criticized For Appointing Director of Outdoor Recreation

Users on X were not thrilled with the decision, as most people who commented on Spanberger’s post saw it as superfluous, not a key investment in the state’s future. One of them wrote: “This is not a priority. Get the electricity prices down.”

What irritated some users was that they seemingly did not understand how this could help Virginians: “Another useless government employee who will do nothing to improve the lives of Virginians. We can all enjoy the outdoors; we don’t need a ‘director’ to tell us how.” Some even complained: “Democrats grow the government so they can give their friends a job and taxpayers get to pay their salaries. Spanberger is nothing but a liar.”

Others added: “Virginia is already for outdoor lovers so you grew the government with another big salary to do what exactly? Government doesn’t produce or grow anything. You’re so bad at this.” One user summarized the overall sentiment of X users, saying: “Another pointless government job. Great job Abby.”

While the new director has not been well-received online, the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis shows that outdoor recreation generated $14.4 billion in value added to Virginia’s economy in 2024 while supporting over 126,000 jobs. It also accounted for around 1.9% of the state’s gross domestic product (GDP).
