Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger has recently come under fire due to the lack of cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) regarding Freddi Chigo Mil, an illegal Mexican immigrant who allegedly stabbed two women. To make matters worse, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security commented on the controversy online, igniting further backlash against the Virginia governor.

As reported by The New York Post, Mil is being charged with second-degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding causing permanent impairment, and is currently being held in jail. The man has been identified as an illegal immigrant, prompting ICE to send a request to Spanberger “not to release” him following his arrest.

After taking office, Spanberger signed an executive order rescinding prior orders that directed local resources toward civil immigration enforcement. This put her directly at odds with ICE, as the agency framed her administration as uncooperative with its efforts.

In an official statement, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin complained about Spanberger’s “sanctuary policies” and said it’s “time to put an end to these preventable tragedies.”

Homeland Security Amplifies Backlash Against Virginia Governor

The controversy was already fueling anti-Spanberger sentiment when the crime happened, but it blew up even more after the official profile of the Department of Homeland Security commented on the news on X. The department accused Spanberger of releasing “murderers” and “terrorists” into the streets of Virginia and vowed to protect locals from the “heinous criminal illegal aliens.”

The post sparked backlash, and many users criticized Spanberger while praising ICE and the DHS: “Thank you for coming to Virginia. Stay until you capture every illegal in our state. Maybe while you’re here, you can take Spanberger into custody since she’s breaking Federal law by harboring illegals who are committing horrendous crimes against American citizens.” Another wrote: “Democrats hate you.”

Someone else chimed in: “Arrest Spanberger for seditious activities that threaten national security. Solitary confinement and no bail pending trial in a year.” The view was shared by many others: “She needs to have the courts remove her asap or she needs to resign – she is RUINING this state!”

Despite the clear anti-Spanberger sentiment, some users even blamed the GOP for the problem: “If Republicans had a spine, they would arrest Democrat politicians who break federal law instead of allowing them to put ICE agents in danger.”

With strong opinions on both sides, the debate continues to raise difficult questions about where state responsibility ends and federal immigration enforcement begins.
