A woman in Waldwick, New Jersey, believes her companion was racially profiled at a local Chase Bank while they were trying to open an account. In her TikTok caption, she said that when they visited the branch on Franklin Turnpike, an employee told her she couldn’t open an account there because she didn’t live or work in the area. According to her, this made no sense since she actually lives nearby. When she questioned why it mattered, she said the employee followed her outside, suggesting her request “sounded fishy,” which led her to start recording.
What Happened in the Video
In the clip, the employee can be seen speaking with the woman and her companion outside the branch. “We’re just trying to make it make sense,” he told them. The woman pushed back, asking why where she lived should matter. She also pointed out that even if she opened an account there, she could still use other Chase branches.
When she suggested his behavior might be linked to her companion being Black, the employee quickly raised his hands and responded, “I’m Puerto Rican.” The woman replied that it didn’t explain why he was questioning them in the first place. “He can’t open a bank account anywhere he wants? Okay, what does that have to do with anything?” she asked.
How Netizens Reacted to the Waldwick Woman’s Claims
Opinions were split in the comments section of the video. Some defended the employee, with one comment reading, “This girl sounds dumb as f**k. I worked for Chase. These are questions we ask. Nothing to do with the kid being black. It’s called doing his due diligence.” Someone else said, “I’ve been in banking for 10 years… he’s not completely wrong and there’s GOT to be more to the story.”
There were those who felt the woman’s reaction was over the top. “Not gonna lie your reaction proves him right. Ratchet…” one person wrote. Some even dismissed her warning entirely, with one commenter joking, “Chase bank ain’t counting no days. They have more money than you can imagine 😅.”
But another group of netizens sided with the woman, saying the employee had crossed a line. “Banks act like they don’t need customers and their money… who cares where they are from… why do banks care?” one viewer asked. Another agreed, writing, “That’s actually insane. People move states and open accounts wtf.” A few went further, criticizing both the bank and the employee. “I have Chase and I hate them so much they suck,” one person said. Another argued, “You can open up an account online… so he’s stupid. & racist.” A different viewer pointed out, “Guys she didn’t tell him where she lived so why is he assuming she doesn’t live there. That’s the issue it’s profiling.”
