While store employees and managerial staff can be rather bothersome at times, this doesn’t mean the customer is always in the right. That said, dozens of users on X are “Team Walmart” in a recent scenario involving an unhinged shopper and an enforced ID check. In a post by user USMC Lady Vet, a shopper OP knows was at a Walmart pick up for his groceries with decongestant medicine among the purchased items. Things quickly went south after the clerk asked if he could provide her with some ID.
After refusing to show his ID card, the male Karen “started screaming at the grocery clerk and calling her an idiot;” the worker promptly called her supervisor to handle the situation. After the Walmart supervisor received an earful of crazed screaming, they took away groceries and brought them back into the store. The furious shopper was told that they wouldn’t be serviced for their purchased pick-up and would have to visit customer service for a refund.

In most ID enforcement scenarios, commenters would likely be in favor of the customer. But in this case, the replies to OP’s post on X are in overwhelming support of the Walmart employees. “Basic respect is warranted when dealing with employees,” remarks a commenter. “When you start screaming and berating the employees, you should get put on a list that you can’t order that way again.” Another chimes in, saying that the customer was “handled exactly how he should have been. Walmart isn’t going to suffer one bit by losing one insane entitled brat.”
A third X user notes how providing ID for drug products like decongestant medicine has “been the law since 2005.” However, they also expressed how they disagreed with the law and wished somebody would change it. USMC Lady Vet responded with, “thank you, and don’t be screaming at a $9.00 hr clerk about it.” OP went on to reply to another comment with a similar sentiment: “screaming at some poor b**** that only works for minimum wage bringing groceries to your car isn’t going to change the corporation’s policies, nor did she make those policies.”
Needless to say, many commenters in the post are unlikely super fans of Walmart. But it’s nice and hopeful to see people coming together to criticize an entitled male Karen for his irrational behavior. No customer has the right to treat a store employee like dirt.
