Sony’s low budget Christian drama War Room has ended Straight Outta Compton’s run as the weekend box office champion.
The War Room earned an estimated $12.3 million over the course of Labor Day Weekend, which brings its reported overall to $28 million. Sony reports that Christian groups made up of just over %70 of the War Room’s viewing audience. The film cost just over $3.5 million to make, and is directed, co-starring, and was co-written by former pastor Alex Kendrick.
Straight Outta Compton has amassed $150 million dollars domestically while earning rave reviews. The biopic caps an impressive run by Universal, who have enjoyed hits such as Jurassic World, Furious 7, and Minions. Their worldwide estimates exceed $4 billion for this summer, the most of any studio.
