To say that Blizzard’s World of Warcraft was (and still is) a success is a bit of an understatement and has opened numerous doors for the multi-billion dollar company, including ventures outside of their usual medium.
Back in 2006, Blizzard and Legendary Pictures revealed that a live-action film based on the Warcraft Universe was in development. Warcraft has seen some difficulty in finding the right director making sure that the story is told accurately and effectively. The search for the right director and other complications took the film’s release date from 2009 to June 10, 2016.
From what little we do know, Warcraft’s story will revolve around how the humans and orcs first came into contact but with one important distinction. One of the most important aspects of the story was that the orcs were not painted in a bad light. There will be just as much emotion and attachment to the orcs as the humans. Blizzard and Legendary seem to have found that ability in Duncan Jones (Source Code, Moon).
There aren’t many details about the individual character’s roles in the film, but you can expect to see many iconic names from the Warcraft Universe. Here are just a few that we know so far.
The Alliance
Travis Fimmel as Sir Anduin Lothar, the leader of the human Alliance.
Dominic Cooper as King Llane Wrynn, ruler over the Kingdom of Stormwind.
Dylan Schombing as Prince Varian Wrynn, the son of King Llane.
Ruth Negga as Lady Taria Wrynn, the Queen of Stormwind.
Ben Foster as Magus Medivh, the Guardian of Tirisfal and a powerful mage.
Ben Schnetzer as Khadgar, mage apprentice to Medivh.
The Horde
Toby Kebbell as Durotan, Chieftain of the exiled Frostwolf clan.
Clancy Brown as Blackhand, an orcish Chieftain on the rise.
Rob Kazinsky as Orgrim Doomhammer, Blackhand’s right hand.
Daniel Wu as Gul’dan, leader of the Shadow Council and powerful Warlock.
Terry Notary as Grommash Hellscream, Chieftain of the Warsong clan
As the release of Warcraft edges closer fans are still waiting for an official trailer release. There are still some treats to whet the appetite though, plenty of pictures, concept art, a video of the skies over Stormwind city, and a prequel graphic novel from Legendary Comics that will debut May 2016 just before the film’s release.
