Many individuals jest that AI is taking over our lives and that humans will eventually be replaced by robots in the workplace. But what happens when you allow AI to have full control of something important in your life, something as serious as your own looks? One soon-to-be bride took this to a whole new level when she decided to allow ChatGPT to decide on cosmetic procedures she would receive before her big wedding day.
The bride, 39-year-old Michaela Lassig, is excited to have a large wedding celebration with the love of her life in Washington. She decided to focus on a personal glow-up that would make her feel great and completely blow her wife away. Michaela, who is a B2B growth marketer at UpKeep and uses AI every day in her line of work, thought it would be an interesting venture to allow AI to become involved in how she appears for her big day.
She stated, “Cosmetic procedures have been a special interest of mine for a whole, and I work in tech and use AI every day. I was like, this is such a cool way for me to bridge those two worlds.” She decided to branch out and ask ChatGPT to analyze her “facial flaws” and gave them an outstanding budget of $2,500.
She told the AI that she wanted her “skin to look flawless,” to “help with age spots,” and to “make my eyebrows not look droopy” among other aspects. As a result, ChatGPT sent her these five concerns to work on:
- Age spots and uneven skin tone
- Large pores and skin texture
- Loss of elasticity and mild sagging
- Droopy eyebrows
- Wrinkles and fine lines
ChatGPT went on to suggest a variety of treatments that could help Michaela achieve her special look, in a dystopian sort of way that many would never think of doing. These included light therapy, Botox, ultherapy, dermaplaning, and more. A month passed and Michaela decided to take the suggestions and begin treatments based on the plan and her budget capabilities.
These included a $750 Botox treatment and an $1,800 Endolift treatment to tighten skin and reduce fat on her face and neck. After the initial treatments, Michaela decided that she will receive more Botox before her wedding day on top of what she already completed. Unfortunately, staying in budget has not quite gone to plan and she stated on the matter, “I’m going to go over budget.”
Michael’s Wife Doesn’t Get It, But Still Supports Her
As for Michaela’s soon-to-be-bride, as well as her friends and family, they said that they aren’t “totally surprised” by this move because they know that she is really invested in AI and has gone through with past procedures even without AI instructing her to.
Her future wife, however, has stated that she “doesn’t totally get it” even though she supports her throughout the entire endeavor. Michaela responded to this by saying, “As long as it’s coming from not a body dysmorphia kind of place, then she’s like, ‘Yeah, let’s go for it.’”
Those on social media have responded exactly as you would expect: a mixture of people thinking that this futuristic way of preparing for your wedding is “cool,” to people saying it is absolutely “horrifying” and stating that it’s similar to watching an episode of Black Mirror.
The unfortunate truth is that AI usage has an incredible number of setbacks and disadvantages, from outright displacing people from their jobs to major privacy concerns. So, would you trust AI to go as far as to change an important feature in your life—your own looks? Let me answer that for you: no.
