Independence Day brings about a lot of patriotism but also an opportunity to air grievances people feel are holding them back from celebrating. That’s exactly what two pro-Palestine protestors did on July 4 in Washington, DC. The pair dressed up as the Statue of Liberty, chained by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The protest occurred amid high tensions between the United States and Iran, which many people believe was provoked by Israel. There is a growing sentiment among Americans that the U.S. is being led into various conflicts that don’t benefit Americans, on behalf of its ally.
It’s that belief that seemingly inspired this duo to dress up as Netanyahu leading a chained Statue of Liberty around. The demonstration took place alongside the Trump administration’s Freedom 250’s Salute to America Independence Day celebrations.
Most people seemed to agree with the protestors’ statements. One Redditor commented on the clip, “Just telling the truth.” Another wrote, “This speaks volumes, and it’s the [expletive] truth.” A third person stated somberly, “It’s funny, because it’s true.“
Others called out those who disagreed with the protestors. One person seemingly referenced right-wing, pro-Israel commenter Ben Shapiro. They made a play at the podcaster’s catchphrase of ‘Facts don’t care about your feelings,‘ with, “I love when the ‘F your feelings’ crowd’s feelings get hurt.“
Another responded to a bystander in the video who had berated the protestors. The Redditor wrote, “He said, ‘Get out if you don’t like our country.’ They are showing they love our country by standing up for it, you dunce.” Indeed, one could argue that the protestors celebrated Independence Day by utilizing their Freedom of Speech – which is very American of them.
It’s worth noting that many Americans chose to celebrate Independence Day by protesting outside the White House. While the pro-Palestine demonstration was one of the more prominent statements, other grievances were aired alongside it.
Interestingly, the pro-Israel crowd was mostly present online instead of in front of the White House. Namely, they were in the comments section of the video on Reddit. Rather than say anything in defense of Israel, those who took issue with the protest chose the ‘What about…’ method instead. Comments calling out Russia and saying Putin controls America just as much as Netanyahu surround the clip.
Perhaps those individuals can join the next protest wearing a Putin mask? Maybe they just need an invitation to join in on taking action for their beliefs, rather than backseat driving other people’s demonstrations.
