Star Wars fans got a nice little surprise dropped on us yesterday with the release of a new 15-second teaser (I said “little” right?).
We already saw Kylo Ren’s (Adam Driver) weird, cross-shaped lightsaber that caused all the buzz (pun fully intended) from the first full-length trailer released back in April. We have seen several pictures of his evil visage as well.
We’ve also gotten glimpses of two of our main characters, Finn and Rey (John Boyega and Daisy Ridley). Other than that, pretty much everything we know is rumor and conjecture.
But the new teaser seems to confirm that Finn–the former Stormtrooper–may have a little Force in him.
The trailer here seems to hint at a lightsaber duel between Kylo Ren and Finn. According to the film canon, pretty much only Jedis/Sith can wield a lightsaber. Admittedly I’m not sure where General Grievous fits in there, but I think we can all agree on Fuck Those Movies. Regardless, making a lightsaber is generally considered the culmination of Jedi training.
So this raises several questions. Does Finn go from Stormtrooper to Jedi? Does the scene immediately following that couple-second shot involve Finn going, “Wait… I have no idea what I’m doing,” and running away (he does kind of look like he’s pissing himself). Did Finn make that lightsaber or did he borrow it off someone? Luke’s lightsaber (the one he made and ended the series with) is green, so Finn most likely didn’t get it from him. So if he didn’t make it himself (which seems like it would be a whole stand-alone movie in itself), where did he get it from?
Regardless, this is a nice little gift to us fans.
