The second season doesn’t look like it’ll be returning to our screens. Following the end of the first season questions about whether we’ll see a sequel have been rife. Now we have the answer: No.
So, No Second Season?
As it stands, Damon Lindelof, the co-creator of Lost and the personal favorite The Leftovers, has no interest in returning to Watchmen. Stating he’s already told the story he wanted to tell Lindelof has effectively closed the door on any further involvement. He has, however, given HBO his blessing to continue telling tales within the Watchmen universe. Something HBO seems unwilling to do.
Speaking to USA Today Casey Bloys, HBO’s programming chief, said “It’s really in Damon’s thinking about what he wants to do. If there’s an idea that excited him about another season, another installment, maybe like a Fargo,’ True Detective (anthology) take on it, or if he wants to do something different altogether.” Bloys added, “We’re very proud of ‘Watchmen,’ but what I’m most interested in what Damon wants to do.”
Why Doesn’t Lindel of Want To Return?
If you followed the companion podcast HBO put out with Watchmen this news will not be a surprise. Lindelof walked listeners through his process in creating the story for Watchmen, informing that the story, themes, and motivations to finally helm a series in this universe came from things he was observing and reading at the time. The truth now, though, is that Lindelof doesn’t feel motivated to say anything right now.
But there is hope that he may have another story to tell in the future.
Watching The Watchmen
A fun fact from the podcast; the original Watchmen comics were instrumental in Lindelof’s development to craft deep narratives and mystery. That reverence caused him to reject doing a Watchmen series twice before finally accepting the offer. What did you think of the series? Did you hope for another series or did it end in the right place?
