A woman from Toledo, Ohio, sparked outrage over the weekend after she posted a video of herself arguing with a senior resident while hospitalized. The patient says she was simply advocating for herself after becoming concerned about her health, but many viewers felt her behavior towards the resident had been intolerable.
The woman, who goes by @fadequeen419 on TikTok, said she had been admitted to the hospital for two days with chest pain and high blood pressure. During her stay, she requested a stress test, and according to her, the staff member performing it encouraged her to speak up about her health.
She claims they told her that although her heart looked good, her blood pressure was “dangerously high” and she needed medication to bring it under control.
Concerned that she could go home and suffer a stroke or heart attack, the woman said she spoke with a resident and asked to be given blood pressure medication. Sometime afterward, a senior resident entered her room, and things quickly became heated.
Patient and Senior Resident Get Into Heated Argument
It is not clear how the argument began because the TikTok video starts with the patient and the senior resident already having a full-blown shouting match.
The senior resident could be heard telling the woman that he was not going to allow her to “guilt trip” or “manipulate” the other resident into giving her what she wanted. He even offered her his badge so she could take down his information and report him if she wanted to.
Although she did not take it, she responded that she did intend to go to his higher-ups and report him for the way he was treating a patient. She also told him that none of the other healthcare providers she had encountered had ever spoken to or treated her the way he was.
As if to point out the irony, the resident asked whether she believed it was acceptable for her to speak to him the way she was doing. She replied, “Absolutely,” arguing that he was a man and was also supposed to behave professionally.
The woman continued to complain, saying that she was worried about her health and felt her concerns were not being taken seriously. The resident insisted that they did care about her health but told her she was “coming in hot.”
Two other staff members eventually stepped into the room and encouraged the resident to leave. After a little more arguing between him and the patient, he finally walked away.
Healthcare Workers Rally Behind the Resident
The video of the Ohio woman’s confrontation with the resident blew up on TikTok, racking up more than a million views. A large number of viewers, particularly those who identified themselves as healthcare workers, sided with the resident and argued that medical professionals should not be expected to quietly tolerate mistreatment from patients.
“Thank God a doctor finally stands up for himself. Some patients are absolutely insane,” one person wrote. Someone else agreed, “All I see is a doctor giving back the same energy. Patients need to be ‘professional’ too.” A third remarked, “These type of patients make healthcare workers jobs HELL.” A fourth added, “Double standards. If you can raise your voice and berate him then so can he. We’re all human and he’s just doing his job.”
“Verbal abuse is no longer tolerated in healthcare. Period. You want respect, you give respect. Point blank period,” one comment read. Another said, “As a healthcare worker…. WE ARE DONE BEING MISTREATED.”
A few people did have different opinions from the rest of the commenters. One nurse felt that the resident should have handled the confrontation differently regardless of the patient’s behavior. “I’ve been a nurse for 16 years and have never once treated my patients like this… He is supposed to be a professional. No matter how bad the patient treats you,” they wrote.
Despite the backlash, the woman has continued to defend her actions in later posts. She shared a photo of her blood pressure reading taken at the hospital, which showed 189/100, and maintained that she had every reason to be concerned about her condition.
