Getting to visit Florida and see Disney World was one mom’s dream for her daughter. However, on that trip, she decided she was going to visit her father with her family since he lives in Florida, too. That detour didn’t end the way she expected it to. Why? Because her father is a Trump supporter, and she can’t relate.
Jess (@strongtherapy) spent the weekend in Florida with her partner and daughter. She says, against better judgment, “I decided to visit my father, a triple Trumper” and things didn’t happen like she expected. She says her father is 79 years old and they always had a “challenging relationship.” That relationship is even worse since Trump was elected for the first time.
Jess was incredibly nervous about bringing her daughter around her father. She said from the moment they arrived, her father couldn’t help but make comments about how much he loves Trump. She says he spoke constantly about how “Trump is doing amazing things for this country.” Jess said that she discovered her “teenage daughter has more critical thinking skills than my 79-year-old father.”
She said he had his MAGA hat on full display while Jess and her partner, both of whom are queer, were visiting. Jess said she realized he has “more loyalty” to Trump than his own family, and it leaves her feeling sad. She said her mother has been dead for almost 30 years and she feels like she doesn’t “have any parents” at this point.
Jess is upset about the lack of empathy that her father has. In the caption to her video, she says that they still enjoyed their Florida trip. In her own words, “We made the best of it despite the MAGA detour.” She said that her daughter was shielded from “the misogynistic, Trump worshipping garbage” that her father spewed. However, she added in a melancholy way, “I’m jealous of the daughters who have dads who would never dream of supporting someone who hates them.”
Many commenters shared their differing views on Jess’ video and how she handled things. One commenter stated, “I have family members that don’t align with my political views but I don’t let that get to me. I do me. You do you. We don’t talk politics. But I wouldn’t cut off anyone because their beliefs don’t align with mine.” Another individual asked this commenter, “Did you hear the part about her father rubbing his politics in their face?” One commenter suggested, “I know walking away is not easy but we don’t choose our family. Peace.”
This video is gaining attention from both sides of the political spectrum due to its heated content. Individuals have taken the time to share how they feel across the board. The comments continue to pour in, showing Jess support in a variety of ways as she deals with this internal battle. Her video explores important themes about family and choosing who we spend our time with.
