If you’ve spent time playing the previous Diablo titles, then you probably recognize Runewords. Runewords essentially take up the sockets in your gear to give each item more benefits by creating additional abilities on top of the ones you’ve chosen from the skill tree. In general, Runewords can be super valuable since each of the abilities they provide are fully passive with automated effects. Let’s take a look at all the Runewords in Diablo 4: Vessel of Hatred and what they do.
How Runewords Work
Runewords are created when two Runes, and Invocation and Ritual Rune, are combined in a piece of gear’s sockets. The Ritual Rune, which goes in the top socket, describes a requirement to collect a certain amount of Offering. Some may require you to cast a skill with a cooldown, or even deal damage without taking any for a certain amount of time to collect various amounts of Offering. Each Invocation Rune, which goes in the bottom socket, requires you to earn so much Offering in order to trigger a passive effect, like gaining Crit Strike Chance for a few seconds, reducing your active cooldowns, or using an ability.
If you happen to generate more Offering then your particular Invocation Rune needs, a mechanic called Overflow goes into effect. Overflow allows your Invocation Rune to use more Offering than required in order to apply a bonus to its effect, making them more powerful or longer lasting.
