The Watcher is not a being of doing sequels, but the multiverse is once more in danger, and there are a lot of stories to discover. What If…? Season 2 unfolds the new mysteries of these vast new realities, also featuring the returning heroes like Strange Supreme and Captain Carter. But what happens in the end, comes to be a little shocking for most viewers. Did you expect to see that villain in What If…? Season 2 ending?
Spoiler Alert: The following content contains heavy spoilers for What If…? Season 2.
What If…? Season 2 Ending
After eight episodes, the final chapter of the What If…? Season 2 story picks up right after Captain Carter saves the 1602 timeline’s universe. Without the ability to open an interdimensional portal herself, Peggy is trapped in this reality until Strange Supreme comes to see her. This is the variant of Doctor Strange we saw in What If…? Season 1; the one that was so powerful that could even stand against the powers of six infinity stones.
We had learned that this variant of Doctor Strange never gave up on bringing back the love of his life Christine Palmer, and that ended with destroying his whole universe. Strange Supreme was then left to live with nothing when The Watcher contacted him to create a team of overpowering superheroes called the Guardians of The Multiverse. In What If…? Season 2 ending, however, things are quite different.
Strange Supreme Saved His Universe
One of the key details in What If…? Season 2 is that Strange Supreme has created a palace for himself called the Sanctum Infinatum. This place is outside of the time, where Strange can travel into any timeline he wishes to.
Strange brings Peggy with her to this place, only to have her aid in catching Kahori. The master of mystic arts is trying to gather as many villains and heroes as possible only so that he can recreate his timeline and save his Christine. This goes wrong by the way, as Captain Carter learns the truth and defeats Strange with the help of Kahori and all six infinity stones. But this wasn’t Strange’s true feeling to attack a friend.
In fact, Strange Supreme saves his timeline by sacrificing himself, dying alongside his demon inside the forge. The final hit with the six stones by Peggy drew Strange’s demon out, only for the Doctor to mention that his grief is too strong. That means that Strange Supreme could never defeat his grief for losing Christine, so he chose to let her live while he’s drowned in death.
Loki Easter Egg and The High Position of Captain Carter in What If…? Season 2 Ending
After Strange dies in his own timeline resurrecting Forge, he never returns to life in the new universe. But, the story is not over yet. The Watcher brings Peggy Carter with her to see the Yggdrasil tree, where all timelines are connected by none other than Loki, the God of Stories. This is the first time an MCU Disney Plus series directly shows a connection to another.
Now one thing that makes this ending more interesting is that The Watcher and Peggy Carter have more of a friendship to share. Watcher knows that this variant of Peggy does whatever she can to save people, even if it ends with her death. Also during What If…? Season 2 we see that many times where Peggy can talk to The Watcher without any magical power, The Watcher’s will, or the Infinity Stones. This proves the fact that Captain Carter is now on the same awareness level as Strange Supreme and supervillain Ultron with the six infinity stones armor.
What Happens Next
By showing how The Watcher is fully aware of Loki and his sacrifice to save the multiverse, this is completely inevitable to see more of these two characters in the future. So with the growth of more multiversal threats, it’ll be up to Loki and The Watcher to deal with them, aided by their team of superheroes led by Captain Carter.
What happens next? After the removal of Johnathan Majors as Kang The Conqueror’s actor in the MCU, it’s all up in the air on what to expect from the next MCU multiverse’s arc. Whether it’s a recast or a new main villain, however, we’ll probably see more of Loki and The Watcher in What If…? Season 3 and the upcoming Avengers movies in Phase 6.
What If…? Season 2 is currently streaming on Disney Plus.
