Fans of zombie survival games might have stumbled upon the Potato in Yet Another Zombie Survivors. This new Steam Early Access rogue-lite horde-busting game lets you build your own squad of survivors and fight off waves of undead. The game features a power-up system; when you open a Yellow Crate scattered around the map, you can pick one out of three random items. Most of these items will increase your squad’s stats, change their weapons, or give you an additional bonus attack. Similar to other rogue-like games such as Halls of Torment or Vampire Survivors. But there’s one item that stands out from the rest: the Potato.

The Potato in Yet Another Zombie Survivors is actually a useless item. It will not increase or decrease your squad’s stats, add bonus attacks, or change your weapon. As one can expect when they read the description that simply says, “Potayto potatoh.” There is also no Achievement that ties with the item, at least at the moment of writing. So what’s the deal with the Potato? Is it a bug? A placeholder? A secret weapon?

It seems that Potato in Yet Another Zombie Survivors was just a simple inside joke or an easter egg. The Potato was supposed to be a placeholder item for one of the earlier builds. But for some reason, Awesome Games Studio decided to not remove it from the item pool. And then, once more players have discovered it, they upgraded the item’s effect to include a reference to Valve’s popular puzzle game, Portal.

If you get three Potato in a single Yet Another Zombie Survivors run the end screen will say, “The potato is a lie.” But, you won’t unlock anything else. One of the random game-over messages also features a binary code that reads “Potato.” 010100000100111101010100010000010101010001001111 is the code if you missed it or haven’t found it yet.

However, in the end, Awesome Games Studio decided to put an end to the root vegetable’s reign. One of the Yet Another Zombie Survivors developers, Kalafiorek, wrote that they’re going to “uproot or improve” the Potato effect. In the end, the June 24, 2023, update removed Potato from the demo and Early access version.

“Sorry about the Potato! We’ll try uprooting it… or improving its current effect with the updates.”

So there you have it: the mystery of the Potato is solved. It’s not a useful item, but it’s a humorous one. If you’re lucky enough to find a Potato in Yet Another Zombie Survivors, you can either keep it to add more challenge or trash it. Either way, you’ll have a good laugh and a memorable experience.
