The world of John Wick will return in The Continental, an upcoming prequel series to the main John Wick movies. Given that The Continental is set decades before the events of the first John Wick, it’s likely that we won’t see Keanu Reeves in his newest iconic role, nor a lot of other familiar faces. However, a few memorable characters from The Continental Hotel have been confirmed to return for the spinoff series, giving audiences an inside look at what they were up to during their younger years.
Everything We Know About ‘The Continental’ Mini-Series
Set to release on September 22nd, The Continental: From the World of John Wick centers around The Continental. This hotel is a neutral ground for the worst of the criminal underworld. With locations worldwide that hitmen and murderers often frequent, the hotel provides its guests with strict rules prohibiting any “business” carried out within its rules. A hotel guest that breaks any of these rules will face a punishment that ranges from being ousted from The Continental network of hotels to being executed.
The John Wick movies mainly focused on the New York branch of The Continental, run by Winston Scott, an old friend of John’s. The hotel first appeared in John Wick (2014) and returned in John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017). The Continental would take on a larger role in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4, with the third movie seeing the hotel get “deconsecrated,” removing all its rules and “neutral territory” status. It was reconsecrated by the movie’s end, only for the hotel to be destroyed again in John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023). Overall, the hotel plays a large part in the John Wick movies, providing the main character with a strictly enforced safe ground and a network to either benefit from or be excommunicated.
Who’s Coming Back For ‘The Continental’?
For a mini-series based around a hotel, most characters returning for The Continental are, somewhat expectedly, the hotel staff. Chief among these is Winston Scott, the owner, and manager of the New York Continental Hotel. Played by Ian McShane in all four John Wick movies, Winston is a friend of John’s but doesn’t show him any favoritism when it comes to the strict “no business” rules of his hotel. In John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, Winston even takes on a slightly antagonistic role as he and John are tasked with killing each other by order of the High Table. After failing to kill John, Chapter 4 sees Winston ousted from his position and excommunicated from The Continental just before the hotel is destroyed.
The Continental: From the World of John Wick will see Colin Woodell (The Originals) as a younger Winston Scott, living in the 1970s decades before he amassed his power as the owner of the hotel. Joining him will be Ayomide Adegun (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes) as a younger Charon, the concierge at The Continental. Played by the late Lance Reddick, Charon was Winston’s right-hand man and a close friend to him and John Wick. Sadly, after Winston fails to kill John in John Wick: Chapter 4, Charon is executed by Vincent Bisset de Gramont, a high-ranking member of The High Table. John avenged his death after he killed Vincent in a duel allowing the New York Continental to be rebuilt with Winston reinstated.
Another John Wick character to return in The Continental is Uncle Charlie (David Patrick Kelly), a crime scene cleaner/body disposal expert first introduced in John Wick. Peter Greene (The Mask) will play a younger version of Charlie. In addition, Katie McGrath (Supergirl) will appear as the Adjudicator, a nameless enforcer of the High Table who informs Winston that he will have to step down from his position as manager of The Continental in John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum after Winston allowed John Wick to escape. When Winston refuses, the Adjudicator has the hotel deconsecrated by order of the High Table. The Adjudicator was played by Asia Kate Dillon (Orange Is The New Black).
The Continental: From the World of John Wick will be available on Peacock starting September 22nd, 2023.
