A video circulating on X shows Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts vowing to push a “Trans Bill of Rights,” saying he will “not sit by” as LGBT+ and trans communities are “demonized,” and adding that “trans rights are human rights.” According to the post from The Blaze, the remarks are tied to his plan to advance the measure. Online users reacted after the clip spread, with many asking what rights transgender people do not already have.

The video shows Markey speaking at a microphone during what appears to be a campaign event, with supporters behind him and “Ed Markey Senate” signs visible. In the clip, he says, “We will not sit by as you demonize our LGBT+ and trans communities,” then adds, “We must pass my trans bill of rights.”

After signs are raised and the crowd reacts, he says, “Trans rights are human rights.” The footage does not show what he said immediately before those lines or the exact venue.

According to the post, the remarks refer to Markey’s plan to advance a Trans Bill of Rights. He has previously sponsored a Senate resolution by that name, though the clip itself does not describe the measure’s text or status.

Reactions to the Call for a Trans Bill of Rights

Several users questioned the premise of a separate bill of rights, including one who asked, “Has anyone bothered to ask him which rights they don’t have that they need a ‘Bill of Rights’?”

Another wrote that “they are already protected by the Bill of Rights,” and a third said, “They ALREADY have the same rights as everyone else.”

Other commenters framed the proposal as going beyond equal treatment. One argued, “They want special rights that supersede the rights of others,” while another said, “Human rights apply to EVERYONE regardless of mental disorder.”

Some treated the remarks as political positioning, including a user who wrote, “Anything for a vote,” and another who called it “a losing message.”

The clip now sits in a wider argument over whether a Trans Bill of Rights would add new protections or cover ground already addressed by existing law. Markey has said he intends to keep pressing the measure.
