You will come across various characters during your playthrough of The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, and one of them is Rauru. He is one of the main characters in the game this time around, and he often advises Link during dungeons and Shrines. If the developers are following the previous iterations, Rauru is the same mysterious and recurring character in the game. We also know him as Kaepora Gaebora in his owl form. Let’s dive into more about who Rauru is in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom.
Rauru in The Legend of Zelda
According to the game’s lore, Rauru is the Sage of Light. He is one of the seven sages in the Zelda world. Rauru built the Temple of Time during the Era of Chaos to protect the Triforce from the Interloper War, which was being fought over its ownership. He named the temple after the Temple of Time from the legends of the hero who wielded the Master Sword and traveled through time. Rauru remained in the Temple of Light in the Sacred Realm, only leaving as the owl Kaepora Gaebora. Eventually, knowledge of the Sacred Realm was handed over to the Sheikah tribe. The Temple of Time was again a part of Breath of the Wild’s Great Plateau, making Rauru a returning character linked to the story. We also see the Sage of Light heavily connected to Hyrule in various parts of the series.

Rauru in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom
Rauru plays a supportive role in the early stages of the game by acting as a friendly NPC who provides guidance to Link. Within Tears of the Kingdom, Rauru is depicted as a god-like spiritual entity. He rescues Link and replenishes his strength by transferring his own power to Link’s right arm. Rauru acquaints Link with the Shrines of Great Sky Island and teaches him about his new abilities, such as Ultrahand, Fuse, and Ascend, among others.
He will also act as a guide to help you during the starting phases of your Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, similar to a narrative guide. Rauru will come to your aid in the more confusing sections of the game, providing extra information when you are stuck. The Light Sage will depart after helping Link with some of the starting missions. He will deem the protagonist ready to take on the challenges in the future and find Zelda.
It is not official if Rauru is the same character we see in the previous iterations. However, it seems like they have given a huge makeover to the appearance of the character. We’re covering the game extensively here at TNS and will keep you posted about any major lore reveals and twists we discover.
