The composer for the FFXVI OST is a man that needs no introduction for most of the Final Fantasy community. The team behind the massively multiplayer Final Fantasy XIV is also helming much of Final Fantasy XVI, and with it comes the legendary composer that has written a plethora of distinct and loved songs. Much of the game’s soundtrack can be heard during prerelease coverage. So just who is this person that is composing the highly anticipated title? Let’s peek behind the curtain.
Composer for the Final Fantasy XVI OST
The composer for the FFXVI OST is a man named Masayoshi Soken. He has a long history with Square Enix and has been with the company since 2001. Most fans of the popular FFXIV embrace him as an iconic reason why the MMO is as successful as it is today. His work is seen all throughout the game and has uplifted many story beats and boss fights. It is no surprise that game director Yoshida Naoki asked him to lend his talents as the composer for the FFXVI OST.
FFXVI has much to prove to win back fans of the single-player titles. The previously released FFXV was not as embraced as past experiences, so the FFXVI OST composer had to be someone that Square Enix knew could helm such a massive undertaking. Soken has proven that he knows what fans of the long-standing franchise love to hear and often stress that his inspiration when composing is the players. He has written many different styles of songs for FFXIV, including lyrical masterpieces and orchestral symphony works of art. They easily get stuck in your head and trigger back to earlier Final Fantasy nostalgia.
Masayoshi Soken Composing for FFXIV
Soken has had a bit of a struggle in the past couple of years. He revealed in 2021 that he had written some of the music for the FFXIV Endwalker expansion while undergoing chemotherapy treatment in the hospital for cancer. He has been back full-time ever since, however, and has continued to release some absolute bangers for the MMO. There is no doubt that gamers are in safe hands with him as the composer for the FFXVI OST.
Final Fantasy XVI releases for PlayStation 5 on June 22. There has been no confirmation as to whether the title will also see a PC release at some point, but all hints point to it being a sure thing in the future, though not this year.
