The argument about Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie being snubbed by the Oscars isn’t ending anytime soon. Many have shared their two cents on the matter, the most recent being Whoopi Goldberg. Unlike many, the icon was interested in the criticism hurled at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences’ voting body. Goldberg dismissed the Gerwig and Robbie Oscar snub discourse, noting that many blew it out of proportion. According to the actress, not everyone would get a prize.
Details of the Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie Oscar Snub
In every Oscar season, the movie industry and its enthusiasts engage in a frenzy of debates about nominations and winners. This year was no different, as nominations for the 96th Academy Awards sparked yet another controversy. The top talking point was the nominations for the Barbie movie. Ryan Gosling and America Fererra picked up nominations for Best Supporting Actor and Actress, respectively. However, Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie didn’t make the cut for the Best Director and Best Actress categories.
The decision rubbed many fans up the wrong way — including Gosling. Shortly after his nomination, Gosling issued a statement expressing his disappointment with the Gerwig and Robbie Oscar snub. Gosling argued that there was “no Ken without Barbie,” and the movie wouldn’t have been a hit without Gerwig’s directing expertise. Ultimately, Gosling said the duo deserved to be honored as no recognition for the film would be possible without their input.
Whoopi Goldberg Talks About the Gerwig and Robbie Oscar Snub
Amid the debate surrounding the omission, Goldberg, an ex-Academy Board member, has shared her honest opinion. During Wednesday’s episode of The View, the actress rubbished the notion that the Oscars snubbed Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie. Defending the nominations, the TV personality said:
“It’s not the elites, it’s the entire family of the Academy Awards who vote for Best Picture nominations. We all vote for Best Picture, everybody…you don’t get everything you want.”
Co-host Sunny Hostin then chimed in, noting that she felt like the Oscars snubbed Ava DuVernay’s Origin this year. However, Goldberg retorted, emphasizing that there was nothing like a “snub.”
“There are no snubs. That’s what you have to keep in mind: Not everybody gets a prize, and it is subjective. Movies are subjective. The movies you love may not be loved by the people who are voting,” she said.
While Goldberg’s point stands, Robbie and Gerwig are still technically in the running for an Oscar this year. Gerwig could take home an award for Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay) and Robbie for Best Picture.
