The Bachelor alum Sean Lowe drew the ire of fans with a comment he made to Zach Shallcross. The highly anticipated season 27 of The Bachelor premiered on Monday, January 23, with Bachelor alum Sean Lowe making a surprise appearance to say some wise words to new Bachelor Zach Shallcross before meeting the ladies. Sean made his The Bachelor debut in season 17, where he proposed to Catherine Giudici. The duo tied the knot a year later, on January 26, 2014, in a live broadcast ceremony. The couple has since welcomed three children — Samuel 6, Isaiah 4, and Mia, 3.
The Bachelor alum remains the only Bachelor lead to marry his final choice, and he has since earned the ultimate Bachelor lead title. Zach is looking to break that record and has been quite vocal about his desire to become a husband and start a family. Sean’s reputation made it fitting that the producers saw him as the perfect person to guide Zach through his journey during and after the show. Producers of The Bachelor tagged season 27 as a throwback to the romantic era of the popular series, and Zach would need the valuable experience of Sean as the season unfolds.
Despite the great intentions of the producers to have Sean take on an advisory role this season, the alum drew the ire of fans with a statement to Zach. In the season premiere, Sean told Zach to be open-minded and supported his assertion by claiming his wife, Catherine, was not his type during his season. He also revealed he didn’t see her as his wife until mid-season. Sean’s statement didn’t go well with some fans, and they have called The Bachelor alum out on it.
Fans Feel Sean Disrespected Catherine With “Type” Comment
Sean’s advice did not sit well with many of the show’s viewers, who felt he disrespected his wife with his “type” comment. The fans were quick to point out that he could have phrased his words in a better way that did not throw his wife and the mother of his children under the bus. Sean’s comments have since caused a significant debate amongst fans, and some took the conversation to Reddit. While commenting on a The Bachelor: Morning After thread, many fans expressed their disdain for Sean’s choice of words. One comment read:
“I’d be straight embarrassed if my husband of ten years? Said that. If I’m not your type then who tf is????”
A section of the commenters also made it about Catherine’s origin and blasted Sean for his comments.
Catherine is bi-racial, and some fans felt Sean’s “type” referenced her race. However, most fans also quickly shut down such claims by explaining they understood how some viewers misconstrued his statements. They also criticized The Bachelor alum for not phrasing his words in a better way that flatters his wife.
Some Fans Feel Sean Was Misunderstood
While many commenters queried Sean for claiming his wife was not his type at first, another section of viewers argued in his defense. Some viewers claimed there was nothing wrong with his statement, and most people just misunderstood him. One fan explained further, saying:
“Also Catherine was regarded as 1 of the most beautiful women that season it would definitely take more than that, or know her confidence. I think it’s perfectly fine to state that someone wasn’t your type at first.”
There is no doubt that Sean’s advice to Zach was a great one that captures the wealth of experience he possesses about the show. As most fans suggested, he could have coined his words better, but that should not taint the beautiful love story he shares with Catherine.
