She found it very discouraging.

A Texas woman broke down in tears at a local Walmart. According to her, a stranger approached her and praised her weight loss. The way she did, however, was deemed inappropriate and insensitive, which led to the woman’s reaction. That reaction, in turn, sparked a heated online debate.

@sammiebry

I really considered not sharing this, but I just feel like as a PSA maybe don’t comment on peoples bodies. I’m sure she thought this was an encouragement, but the gestures, the unsolicited advice and calling my loose skin balls really hurt in a way that I can’t quite explain. I know it’s my insecurity to deal with and I’m trying, but I wish this interaction never happened. #looseskin #fitnessjourney #bodytransformation #fitnessinspiration #fitnessmotivaton

Samantha Bryant shared her reaction to the interaction on TikTok. She has vlogged her journey to lose 250 pounds, and, currently, she has dropped an impressive 170. While she has multiple viral clips, this one in particular blew up, garnering 2.4 million views, 284,500 likes, and more than 5,500 comments.

In her clip, the Texas woman said that something “discouraging” had happened at the Walmart. According to her, she was shopping and about to grab a salad dressing when another woman approached her randomly and told her, “Oh, you’ve lost a lot of weight. I can tell you’ve lost a lot of weight.”

Samantha then said that the woman grabbed her own belly and her legs, saying that she had also lost a lot of weight. The lady said, according to Samantha, “I can tell you’re doing a good job. You just need to keep going.”

The Texas woman explained that the woman’s gestures and even her suggestion to get some new shorts really got to her. She said she is very insecure about her loose skin, and while she understands the woman wanting to encourage her, she felt quite the opposite.

“Please be nicer to people or don’t comment on their bodies in public,” Samantha said.

Clip Sparks Debate, Samantha Claps Back

The video sparked multiple reactions.

Some users were supportive of Samantha, with one user agreeing, “Don’t comment on people’s bodies.” Another one echoed this sentiment, saying, “Commenting on a stranger’s body is crazy.”

Others, however, argued that the stranger did nothing wrong and was being nice to Samantha. One viewer said, “There is nothing bad about what she told you.” Still, some countered this stance by saying that the words of encouragement were poorly expressed. One commenter wrote, “Good intentions do not make you void of accountability.”

Both stances clashing in the comments section led to Samantha’s clip’s virality. An established audience, thanks to her documenting her weight loss journey, is also a contributing factor.

Samantha ended up commenting on the video. She said she was an emotional person and added that she will continue to post her day-to-day life, even if it is considered “embarrassing.”
