Wonder Man joins the long list of Marvel series in development for Disney Plus, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) will helm the series with writer Andrew Guest (Brooklyn Nine-Nine). Cretton will executive produce too, but it is unknown if he will direct any episodes, as his deal is still in the works following his success with Shang-Chi.
Not much is known about the possible Wonder Man Marvel series. The project has to step into line as the studio constantly has movies and shows in development, and most are meticulously released at the right time to serve the greatest universe. With Guest’s history with comedy, this could lean on the more humorous side of the MCU. It is looking like Cretton’s live-action Disney Plus series could start production in 2023.
The origins of Wonder Man for Marvel date back to the 1964 comic Avengers No 9, where he started as a villain but over time switched sides by the 70s. He has ties to the West coast, so he could be paired with any of the characters established in the region. In some stories, he has connections to Zemo, so Daniel Brühl could reprise his role as he did in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Other stories explore his relationship with Scarlet Witch, played by Elizabeth Olsen in the MCU.
Wonder Man Marvel Series in line with Disney Plus projects
Currently, Disney Plus is hosting Ms. Marvel and will follow it with I Am Groot and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. In the works for the future are Secret Invasion, X-Men ’97, Armor Wars, another season of Loki and What If…?, Echo, Agatha: House of Harkness, Spider-Man: Freshman Year, Marvel Zombies, an untitled series in Wakanda, and Daredevil. Like anything that gets done in the superhero franchise, the biggest questions are when will we see it and how will it fit in the MCU? Likely, that answer won’t come for a little while, especially as Cretton works on his Shang-Chi sequel and American Born Chinese for Disney Plus.
