For this year’s April Fools’ Day, some World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy 14 players united to share memes and pictures while swapping each game’s context.
WOW, Final Fantasy 14, And April Fools
World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy 14 players collaborate for April Fools’ Day by swapping game context and making jokes. The timing of this community collaboration is particularly interesting as WOW lots some of its player base to Final Fantasy 14.
The problem was, World of Warcraft experienced a major drop in subscribers due to player dissatisfaction and Blizzard’s handling of workplace harassment claims. This led players to try Final Fantasy 14 instead. While World of Warcraft’s future is uncertain, players from both games chose to remember good times and have fun together on April Fools’ Day.
First posted on Reddit, r/ffxiv and r/wow subreddits had switched headers, logos, and descriptions. While the URLs remained the same, players shared pictures from both games out of context and referenced moments from the other game.
For instance, r/wow shared a picture of a user featuring a Final Fantasy 14 character enjoying Dragonflight. Another user joked about the Burning of Teldrassil in World of Warcraft by quoting an infamous scene from Final Fantasy 14.
The two communities collaborated because World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy 14 are both prepping for major content updates. WOW’s Patch 10.1, called Ember of Neltharion, will take players underground to the Dragon isle to uncover Deathwing’s dark secrets.
Meanwhile, Final Fantasy 14’s Patch 6.4, The Dark Throne, will have the Warrior of Light facing Golbez, a powerful Voidsent and a reference to the antagonist of Final Fantasy 4. Both patches will bring new story quests and raid tiers, but the release dates are yet to be announced.
