While we know an X-Men relaunch is taking place later this year, Marvel has been rather light on the details. In fact, the only thing we do know is that the relaunch will occur in July. However, this week’s Women of Marvel #1 has given fans their first taste of what the new era of X-Men will look like. The introduction of Angelique Roche’s one-shot confirms that the X-Men will contain at least two different teams. Even more, we get a glimpse at which X-Men will be leading these teams come summer.
X-Men Relaunch
In the opening pages of Women of Marvel #1, we see two teams of mutant superheroes coming as part of the X-Men relaunch. One team is led by Rogue, while the other is under the leadership of Kate Pryde. This is a big deviation from the usual mutants in charge of the X-Men. For many years, the role of the leader has been given to either Cyclops or Storm, who handled the first big split of the team into Blue and Gold. However, Rogue and Kate have been around for quite some time and have both proven themselves as capable leaders. Rogue took charge of a rather unconventional team during the Messiah Complex event and even took control of the Avengers’ Unity Squad. Meanwhile, Kate has led both the Marauders and the X-Men (RessuXion Era).
Not only will the X-Men relaunch give us two teams, but Women of Marvel also teased who will be on those teams. During the final story in the one-shot, Madame Web gets a vision of Rogue and Kate taking charge. Behind Rogue, we see Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Gambit. Meanwhile, Kate’s team is mostly blurred, though we get a glimpse of Emma Frost. The vision also shows Storm giving a speech at a podium. Perhaps she is reintroducing the X-Men to the world after the Fall of X/End of Krakoa.
A Tumultuous Year For Mutants
While 2024 is starting off on a bad note for the mutants of Earth, there is plenty of mutant content coming out this year. Through May, the End of Krakoa will dominate most of Marvel’s X-issues. Then, in June, we get the finale and finally see how the war with Orchis ends. In July, we are getting the official X-Men relaunch with new creative teams and a new set of problems for the mutants to deal with.
