It was already announced that, in the world of XCOM 2, things did not go well for humanity during the timeline of XCOM: Enemy Within. Speaking to PC Gamer, XCOM: Enemy Within‘s Senior Producer Garth DeAngelis said “It’s like Enemy Within never happened. Because you lost. You lost within the first third of the game.” This means that the technology and types of units we see in XCOM 2 can be dramatically different, as the XCOM team is an underground, rebellious organization instead of a group funded by every government in the world. So, if Enemy Within never happened, what did? How did our world fall so quickly into the hands of the alien invaders? That is what the upcoming novel, XCOM 2: Resurrection, will answer.
XCOM 2: Resurrection is the official prequel novel to XCOM 2. It will provide explanation of the alternate timeline that is the quick loss in Enemy Within that leads to the events of XCOM 2. Resurrection is written by Greg Keyes, who previously wrote novels based off The Elder Scrolls, Babylon 5, and Star Wars. He has also written original sci-fi and fantasy novels, such as the Kingdom of Thorn and Bone series. XCOM 2: Resurrection will tell the story of Amar Tan, a newbie to the XCOM team that is struggling to maintain any freedom against the superior alien forces. One day, the Amar and the XCOM team receive an SOS from a man who claims to have a secret that could change the tide of the war against the alien forces. Since Earth is still completely oppressed when XCOM 2 comes out in February, I would not expect too much of a happy ending for Amar and the XCOM gang at the end of XCOM 2: Resurrection. The novel comes out on November 10th, which was originally about when the game XCOM 2 was supposed to be released before being delayed. It is being published by Insight Editions and can be preordered on their website here.
