There are many Minecraft versions you can find all over the web. From the official Java and Bedrock to knockoffs in various digital storefronts and a standalone app on a browser. But have you heard of Oasis, the ambitious AI-generated Minecraft? Yes, you can now turn a humble gameplay screenshot into a full experience via AI running in real time. Well, it does come with some caveats though.
All the basic controls you’d expect from any Minecraft clone are here in Oasis. You can move around using WASD keys, use items from the item bar, put down blocks, find a Creeper… the works!
But while the familiar basics are there, some quirks come along too; for instance, there’s no map generation via unique seeds. Instead, Minecraft Oasis offers five preset ‘visual samples’ to be AI-generated as a starting point:
- Village Outpost.
- Dense Forest.
- Rugged Coastline.
- Desert Expanse.
- Mountain Meadow.
Nevertheless, you can try uploading your own screenshot to be explored. Though fair warning, it’s a feature very much still in development and can lead to mixed results.
For those looking for an extra challenge, Oasis’s developers have added a twist: complete difficult objectives to earn rewards. Given how the game currently plays, though, accomplishing these tasks might prove challenging– for all the wrong reasons.
While no doubt that this is an impressive piece of engineering, there are still huge problems with the AI-generated Minecraft Oasis.
The main glaring issue is it’s running in an extremely small 1:1 resolution and it looks very blurry. Texts on the item bar are nothing but unreadable. Then as you try to move around, you’ll quickly notice the terrible input delay and the fact it’s running on a sub-20 FPS. It feels more like trudging through molasses than, you know, mining and crafting.
Objects flicker in and out, changing type or simply disappearing as you move around the world. Oftentimes, similarly colored blocks turn from one type into another too. One second you’re walking on Sand blocks, the next, it’s morphed into Plank blocks. A cliff could take another shape entirely or suddenly vanish without a trace when you’re taking a closer look. Honestly, we’d be very impressed if someone could perform the Discord contest tasks — and actually win.
Remember that Oasis Minecraft only works on Google Chrome right now and you only have 5 minutes to explore and complete the objectives. If you’re keen to try this technological sorcery, head over to https://oasis.decart.ai with a healthy dose of curiosity, and a sense of humor. After all, who knows what might pop in — or out — of your world next.
