Payday 3 is a month away, and that’s the end of a wait that took years for the fans. Starbreeze always kept Payday 2 up to date with new DLCs, content updates, new weapons, and online features. Considering that the game is ten years old, the studio did its best to keep an old game alive by today’s standards. On the other hand, Starbreeze also knew that Payday 2 wouldn’t last forever, and developing a sequel was a must. Payday 3 is a sequel to a big game, and that’s worrying some players as to whether the previous games were necessary to play to follow the story in the upcoming title. The short answer is it’s not. Here’s why you don’t actually need to play Payday: The Heist and its sequel before the upcoming installment.

You Don’t Need to Play the Previous Games Before Payday 3

If the upcoming title is the first game in the franchise you’re planning to dive into, that’s probably why you’re asking this question. Payday 2 does have a background but doesn’t have a particular story. There are four characters robbing stores, cars, and cash, and the only thing you need to focus on is the mission you’re trying to complete. You don’t need to know anything else about the game’s background and who the characters are. Payday 3 isn’t going to be any different; just like the previous two games, there’s still no big narrative behind the game – everything you need to know is right inside the action.

Since the game is a month away, if you want to practice or make sure that this heist experience is something you’ll enjoy, Payday 2 is still a fun game in 2023. The graphics and online features are surely below today’s standards, but it’s still a pleasant co-op experience with friends. The level designs are always the best parts of Payday games, and that’s what players mostly enjoy. But don’t expect an AAA game experience from it because you’ll notice many outdated features.

You won’t lose anything by skipping the first two games, so you can enjoy Payday 3 without checking them out. The game’s first version won’t be its final version; as announced, it will get a big graphical change after a few updates. We expect big technical improvements, new hacking options, and more creative missions. The game will be released on September 21, and the pre-orders are up to allow you to access the game three days earlier for the Gold and Silver Edition buyers.
