A Black woman in Virginia recently went on a TikTok rant complaining about how white people can’t seem to “mind their own business.” She said she came to that conclusion after an encounter with a stranger at a local gas station who she claims provoked her for no reason. The video has surpassed 100,000 views as of this writing, and many people in the comments section are sympathizing with her.
The woman said the incident happened while she was at a Wawa gas station to grab an iced latte and a snack wrap before work. She explained that after placing her order, she noticed an employee adding bacon to her food, even though she had intentionally left it off because she does not eat pork.
While trying to sort out the misunderstanding with the employee, the woman said an older white man suddenly inserted himself into the conversation. According to her, the stranger stood close enough that he was almost “breathing” on her neck before insisting that she had ordered bacon.
“I jumped back and I was like, excuse me,” the woman recalled. “And I didn’t say anything else to him after that, cause I’m like, today is not the day, devil. Today is not the day.” She said she tried to show the employee the receipt she had been given after placing her order, but the man interrupted again, more aggressively than before.
She claimed that when she asked him not to speak to her, he started using profanity with her and criticized her for being on the phone with her husband while trying to resolve the issue.
The Virginia Woman Says White Bystanders Failed to Step In
The woman said she was especially upset by what happened next. According to her, none of the white customers inside the store stepped in to defend her or tell the man to leave her alone. She said it wasn’t until she stood her ground and confronted the stranger that the manager came out to deescalate the situation, all while she was receiving “dirty looks” from those inside.
“What I got from this interaction is it’s okay for white people to berate us… to say anything, any crazy [expletive] they wanna say out of their mouths to Black people. But when we try to defend ourselves, it’s a problem,” the woman said.
She added, “You guys hate us so much, but y’all can’t leave us alone… We could go all the way to another planet a million light years away, and y’all will still follow us and find us, to terrorize us. Because you’re obsessed. That’s the problem.”
Netizens React to the Virginia Woman’s Story
Many Virginia viewers sympathized with the woman and said the man’s alleged behavior was unacceptable. “Wow! I’m so sorry, I definitely would’ve had your back!” one person wrote. Another commented, “This made me so mad. I’m so sorry this happened to you.” A third said, “Do not patronize that establishment anymore, those folks do not care about you, and they showed you that.” A fourth suggested, “I’d call the corporate of that store and let them know what occurred. they have the video I’m sure.”
Several people also felt the man had targeted her because of her race. “His actions were NOT OKAY! Those of us who aren’t like that need to do more to call out racism,” one comment read. Another added, “I’m so sick of racism and I’m embarrassed to be white sometimes.”
Some netizens, however, took issue with the woman’s statements about white people. “Please don’t generalize. It’s not all white people,” one viewer wrote. Someone else chimed in, “It’s awful, and you’ve every right to be furious with the man who attacked you. But it is unreasonable and wrong to generalize about all white people because bystanders did not assist you. This way of thinking is small and closed minded.”
The Virginia clip has continued to generate discussion online about racism and whether negative encounters with individuals should be used to make broader claims about entire groups of people.
