President Donald Trump recently held his State of the Union address. As usual, whenever he appears and makes sweeping statements, both his critics and supporters speak up loudly. Aside from Rep. Al Green, who was removed after protesting against Trump, other representatives also made their stance clear, including Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar and Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib.
The moment unfolded when Trump began speaking about how he would deal with the Somali immigrant community as part of what he described as a war on fraud. He claimed that America was full of corruption and said that Minnesota was a prime example. Trump stated that $19 billion had been stolen from the country by members of the Somali immigrant community. He referred to them as “Somali pirates” and claimed they were responsible for importing cultures of bribery, corruption, and lawlessness. He also blamed what he called unrestricted immigration and open borders for enabling the situation.
Understandably, the Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar appeared angered by what Trump was saying about her state. She began yelling,“You have killed Americans! You should be ashamed!” Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib, who was seated next to her, also joined in as Trump continued speaking. Despite the interruption, Trump went on with his remarks, and parts of the crowd cheered once he finished that portion of his speech.
When the video appeared on Reddit, many users sided with the Minnesota and Michigan representatives. A number of commenters praised them for speaking up. “Good for them! We can’t act like this presidency is normal and just sit there and let him spew lies, when he’s trying to take away your 1Am right to speech,” one user said. Another wrote, “This is the bare minimum that the other representatives need to be doing. Props to these two representatives for actually doing their jobs.”
Others remarked on how chaotic the address felt overall. The constant clapping and standing ovations from parts of the audience stood in contrast to what some expect from a serious and formal event. “Also, I hate how everyone is clapping/standing every few moments. This isn’t mass. I swear half his speech is just them standing to clap,” one Redditor commented.
Some expressed disappointment in representatives and officials who still appeared to side with Trump despite controversies surrounding his name, including references to the Epstein files. A few commenters made strong accusations against those who cheered for him. “When there is no professional, legal, or lawful remedy to stop the government cover-up of the murders of Renee Good, Alex Pretti, and the ongoing cover-up of protecting the violent sex offenders documented and mentioned millions of times in the Epstein files, you are under the exact tyranny as described in the constitution,” one commenter wrote.
