This weekend famous youtube personality Boogie2988 had his videos vanish without a trace. Fans were wildly speculating as to what could have happened. Did Boogie call it quits? Did someone report his account? Was he hacked? After almost a day without answers, it appeared Boogie was a victim in a hacking attack. This became clear when the real Boogie posted on Reddit explaining what had happened. Readers can see his Reddit post here. For viewer convenience, we also have it in a screen grab for you.
Turns out the stunt was an elaborate move by a twitter user by the handle Lurch. Reddit user B-VOLLEYBALL-READY managed to grab a screenshot of Lurch’s twitter, claiming to have done the ill-deed. The link for that is here. Another Reddit user MrMario2011 weighed in that Lurches motivations were to replace all of the real Boogies info on his accounts with links to Lurch’s own pages. A way to claim some of Boogie’s gargantuan user base. However, I was unable to find any information confirming that to be the motive.
Fortunately, Boogie’s videos have since been reinstated. There has yet to be an official update on Boogie’s channel as to what exactly happened, and fans are eagerly waiting to find out what his take on this frustrating breach of security is. Fellow youtube personality AlphaOmegaSin addressed his own opinions on the matter and they’re excellent. We have a link for our readers here as he goes into some of the problems with youtube security protocols and how Boogie of all people was undeserving of this. Boogie has been a prominent member of youtube’s gaming community for years and has always promoted creative discussion of video games, as well as support, love, and acceptance of his entire fan base, even his haters.
The Nerd Stash will report any updates on the story. If Boogie2988 posts a response we’ll be reporting it here. Sound off in the comment section to let us know what you think about this subterfuge of youtube’s security measures.
