Despite its charming atmosphere, the world of Zenless Zone Zero is filled with mysteries and dark secrets. Although players will slowly uncover these buried histories, the development team hinted about future Zenless Zone Zero lore during an interview with a Japanese media outlet, Famitsu. They said that New Eridu was formed gradually over time after the disasters of the Ancient War, and then the first New Eridu inhabitants slowly arose on this land. During the long period after the war, many new Hollows appeared. Despite everyone’s attempt to destroy the Hollows, many remained.
“New Eridu may be difficult to define in terms of modern geographic area and population,” the Zenless Zone Zero development team said, “Eventually, players will come to understand that this is more than just a city.” They then hinted that New Eridu wasn’t the only place humans could survive in this post-apocalyptic world. “Hollows are, in fact, the “aftereffects” of ancient wars or the remains of wars,” they said. Besides the known Hollows, the team said there were even more out there that no one had explored.
Another interesting piece of Zenless Zone Zero lore is that Hollow and Ethereals actually have their own unique ecology. After all, Ethereals are creatures that were gradually born in the Hollows after the disaster of the ancient war, and they were influenced by time and other factors.
Besides talking about Hollows, the development team mentioned that players may encounter other Proxies in the future. So far in the story, we’ve not yet met any friendly Proxy due to their rarity. “Stay tuned as the story unfolds to see if more Proxies will appear in the future,” the Zenless Zone Zero development team said.
The interview tried to breach the topic of upcoming characters. Unfortunately, the development team refused to share more. “We have no new information to share with you at this time. However, we promise to bring you relevant information at the appropriate time in the future,” they said.
