The Nintendo Switch has been one of the hottest items on any market since its release, with consoles selling out nationwide. It’s portability and unique design have made it stand out from the competition. Popular Science agrees, naming the gaming console as its Entertainment Innovation of The Year.
This news comes out of Reddit, as user Wolfgabe found the announcement in the latest issue of the Popular Science magazine.
“So I got my recent issue of Popular Science where they go down with their best tech innovations of the year [and] imagine my surprise when I get to the Entertainment category and the Grand Award Winner for 2017 is Nintendo Switch. I just gotta say Nintendo isn’t messing around this time.”
While the award may not come as a surprise to many inside the gaming community, it’s definitely not what people would have thought for the console before its release. Hype has certainly been building for the console since its announcement, but following the Nintendo Switch Live presentation back in January, many worried it would be another Wii U disaster.
A rocky show, filled with odd presentations, bad translations, and questionable release games rounded out the convention. It all felt like the Wii U all over again, a console that had very little games, design flaws, and overall communication issues when it comes to how Nintendo took care of it.
Yet upon its release, The Nintendo Switch overcame all of these obstacles, praised for console releases like Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Arms with total sales of 3.92, 3.54, and 1.18 million units. More than anything, fans and critics have loved the portability and design of the on the go console.
As of July 26, 2017, Nintendo announced that it has sold 4.7 million Switch units worldwide, alongside 13.6 million sales of software for the console.
