At last, fans can once more take control of Cal Kestis in Star Wars Jedi Survivor. Fans are already buzzing about the game and claiming it is just as good, if not better, than its predecessor. As long-time fans know, this is far from the only great game taking place in a galaxy far, far away. For decades, games set in this timeless universe have captivated players and allowed them to live out their Jedi and Sith fantasies. Today, we are taking a look at ten of the best games to try out after completing Cal’s latest adventure.
10. Super Star Wars
For our first entry, we are heading to the SNES era. On that system, three games, one for each entry in the OT, were released. The Super Star Wars series still holds up for many, even if certain aspects are outdated. The challenge is still rather high, even by today’s standards. The games retell the stories of the original movies. Also, some massive liberties are, of course, taken. In 2015, the games were re-released on modern consoles with various new elements, such as save states. These games are a great choice to play next for a nostalgic trip with some decent challenges.
9. Jedi Fallen Order
There is no denying Jedi Fallen Order is a fantastic game in many ways. The only reason it is so low on the list is that, odds are you have already played it. Most people enjoying Jedi Survivor have likely already taken on Cal’s first adventure. Still, the game deserves another look simply because it is filled to the brim with content. Besides a full and exciting story set between the prequel and original trilogies, countless collectibles and upgrades can be found scattered on the various planets. The game rewards players for exploration and leveling up, ensuring that even those who have beaten the story will find many things to keep the game going.
8. Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
Don’t let the Lego theming fool you. This is a top-tier game in many ways. Many fans may prefer the original two games or The Complete Saga, but this game is debatably better in many ways. The game takes players through all nine movies in the Skywalker Saga, allowing fans to play through their favorite moments. Fans of the older Lego games will be surprised by just how ambitious this newer title is. With open-world gameplay and skill tress to upgrade, there is plenty to do outside of just playing the levels. The game also has over 300 unlockable characters for players to grind for, which isn’t counting DLC.
7. Shadows of the Empire
Released in 1996 for the Nintendo 64, Shadows of the Empire is a third-person shooter that puts players in the shoes of Dash Rendar. The game was part of a massive multimedia project by Lucasfilm. There was a novel, junior novelization, comic book series, trading cards, and a number of toys. Essentially, they wanted to have the same level of marketing a film would have without making a film. The game is what people remember most and for a good reason. There is plenty of variety, including vehicle segments and a thrilling story set between Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
6. Battlefront II (2017)
Before Jedi: Survivor and its predecessor, the revamped Battlefront series was the game on everyone’s mind. The sequel is everything fans hoped it would be. Able to play through the original and prequel trilogies, fans can take the reigns of some of the best soldiers in the galaxy. The multiplayer mode is where the game truly shined, although it did get off to a rocky start. After controversy involving microtransactions, the game slowly moved away from these mechanics in favor of fans earning power-ups and characters.
The game also allows fans to take control of some of their favorite Jedi and Sith, allowing them to level the playing field. For those who aren’t fans of multiplayer, the game also has a fun story mode taking place immediately after Return of the Jedi.
5. Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
The second game carrying the name Jedi Knight but the third in the Dark Forces series, Jedi Outcast was a pioneer in many ways. The game allows players to live out their ultimate Star Wars fantasy and fill the shoes of a Jedi. Kyle Katarn is a mercenary and former Jedi who has cut ties with the force. When a Dark Jedi rises to power in the Empire, he must rekindle his connection to the force to bring him down. The game carries a hack-and-slash style of playing instead of the mostly FPS style of previous games. Players must learn a variety of lightsaber combos as well as numerous force abilities. This game helped introduce saber mechanical that would be perfected in later titles.
4. Battlefront II (2005)
It doesn’t get more nostalgic than this. 2005 was a huge year for Star Wars fans. In addition to the release of Revenge of the Sith, what was then known as the quintessential game in the universe also hit store shelves. Battlefront II took everything the original game did and improved on it. Players could take control of soldiers from their favorite factions, including the Empire, Separatists, and Clone Troopers.
There were several game modes, with the fan favorite still being the Rise of the 501st. The game also introduced Jedi characters for fans to control, a mechanic that would carry over into the remake in 2017. While slightly outdated, thanks to graphics, this original classic is still fondly remembered today. If a player has yet to experience it, it is perfect to check out after beating Jedi Survivor.
3. Rogue Squadron
Ground troops weren’t the only soldiers in the fight against the Empire. In fact, some of the most exciting battles took place in the stars. This game sees players take control of Rogue Commander Luke Skywalker as he battles the Empire alongside his X-Wing squadron. The game allows players to see the other side of the battle, and fans ate it up. Rogue Squadron is an arcade-style flight game that has 16 different missions. The game spawned two sequels and one spiritual successor in Star Wars Episode I: Battle for Naboo. After maxing out Cal’s force abilities, this is a great way to fight the battle against the Empire in the skies.
2. Knights of the Old Republic
Regarding Star Wars games, Knights of the Old Republic remains one of the fan favorites. This RPG allows players to play as a Jedi in a story set thousands of years before The Phantom Menace. As the story progresses, players make choices to see their character stay in the light or fall into the dark. This freedom is one of the things players remember the most. Depending on whether they turn Sith or stay Jedi, players can unlock specific abilities that ensure replay value is through the roof. Every choice made counts towards the ending, giving players ultimate freedom. In 2021, a remake was announced, meaning those who complete Jedi: Survivor have another game to look forward to.
1. The Force Unleashed
Before the Jedi series, this game was seen as the gold standard for single-player Star Wars games. The Force Unleashed follows Galen Marek, a powerful force user Darth Vader takes on as a secret apprentice. Under the name Starkiller, Galen was trained to track down and kill Jedi scattered throughout the galaxy. Galen begins questioning his loyalty to Vader and soon feels the pull toward the light. As the title suggests, the Force is a huge part of the gameplay. Never before were fans able to use the Force in such powerful and destructive ways. With the highly customizable lightsaber mechanics and skill trees, this game pioneered what the Jedi series would later perfect.
