It’s “showtime” for the Mortal Kombat 2 movie, and the trailer has delivered a ton of details for fans to digest. The second film of the new rebooted movie-verse of the MK franchise has been officially showcased, and it seems like hidden details and easter eggs have been included for fans to dissect. Let’s dive into five of the most awesome video game references that will leave you scratching your head after you’re done watching the Mortal Kombat 2 movie trailer.
5. Johnny Cage Is Wearing His MK11 Jacket

Mortal Kombat 11 introduced the concept of timelines, and a past version of Johnny Cage was brought to the future. That young Johnny had an iconic blue jacket with the letters “JC” on it, and well, Karl Urban is wearing the exact same one here in the Mortal Kombat 2 movie trailer. It’s amazing to see the directors remaining faithful to the original material, but to add an identical item of apparel from the game is just delightful to watch.
4. Some Dead Characters Are Back

Dying in Mortal Kombat isn’t the end of a character. Becoming a revenant, turning into a demon in the NetherRealm, or just coming back to life with some sort of spirit-world logic behind it is all that’s needed. And it seems like Kung Lao has taken a huge portion of that logic by coming back to Liu Kang in a Shaolin Monks-esque scene, as you can see above.

Moreover, we have Kano completely back to the land of the living, and Sub-Zero turned into Noob Saibot deep down in the NetherRealm. Unfortunately for us, there’s no easter egg or reference to Goro or Nitara in the Mortal Kombat 2 trailer. Very curious to see how this new character death logic works in the rebooted MK movies.
3. The Pit Map Is In The Movie

The Pit is one of the iconic Mortal Kombat maps that was first introduced in the MKII game. It’s not an accident that it’s included here in the Mortal Kombat 2 movie trailer as an easter egg at all. The pillars behind Sindel show that Sonya and the Queen are fighting right at the bottom of the Pit, and it’s magical to see these references to the original MKII.
2. Jax, Disappears?!

It happens in a flash, but we get to see Jax disappear from sight. The magic seems like the one from Li Mei in MK1, but it’s a bit of a stretch to think that character does this to Jax in this movie. This could very well be the way that Shang Tsung transfers the competitors to different arenas, or something else entirely. As of right now, Jax is MIA.
1. MK Score Board

Just like how we get to know the rounds we lost and won during a match in Mortal Kombat games, it seems like Outworld is using the same technology in the tournament in the Mortal Kombat 2 movie trailer. The image above takes only a second, and it seems like the two meters count wins/losses for Earthrealm and Outworld. So much better that we have the actual tournament happening in this movie instead of Shang Tsung attacking other realms without permission.
