Bloober Team’s take on Silent Hill 2 is absolutely incredible, from faithfully recreating the town of Silent Hill to keeping the emotional integrity of the original. Of course, what fun is a new game if you aren’t pouring mods into it? Fortunately, fans have cooked up some really great mods that can help make your experience better. Let’s review the top five mods for Silent Hill 2 remake that I thought were best as featured on Nexus Mods.
Sunny Hills
While some players might consider the Sunny Hills mod to be the exact opposite of how you should play any Silent Hill game, I can tell that it can be incredibly useful. Sure, it turns off a lot of the fog and lets the sun shine down on creepy little Silent Hill, but at least it makes things a little easier to see. Without the mod, you can barely see your hand if you hold it out in front of you.
Players are also given the option to toggle fog. However, with the fog, some players have reported that the game is much brighter than expected. You can check out the mod at this link.
Hair Sheen Removal
After booting up the game, I’ll admit that I first noticed how shiny and blonde James’ hair was. If you look at the accessibility options in the game’s settings, he almost looks beach blonde. Fortunately, it looks like the color is actually because of a sheen texture the developers gave it.
With the Hair Sheen Removal mod, you’ll be able to enjoy James Sunderland with a much more appropriate hair color. Honestly, I don’t know why they added so much sheen to his hair. It almost makes it look like he never washes it, even when you’re looking at it in a dark room. The mod can be downloaded at this link.
FPS Unlocker – Widescreen
The FPS Unlocker and Widescreen mod does just that: unlocks the FPS from 30 and removes the black bars on the side of the screen. Now, if you’re using a wider monitor, you’ll be able to really see everything that Silent Hill 2 has to offer. However, the bars are only removed in scenes not locked at 16:9, so some cutscenes may look a little wonky.
The mod’s creator also notes in its logs that while the cutscenes will now run with unlocked framerates, some scenes are still locked at 30 FPS. Despite that, the mod will run incredibly well for those with OLED screens. If you want to install this mod, you can do so at this link.
Silent Hill 2 HD Collection
The Silent Hill 2 HD Collection mod essentially brings a faithful rendition of the Silent Hill 2 Remaster that can included in the Silent Hill HD Collection. Similar to the Sunny Hills mod, players can see the world around them much more clearly. However, unlike the former, the sun isn’t going to shine as brightly. The mod primarily just removes the fog from the Silent Hill 2 remake.
While some fans are divided on how the Silent Hill HD Collection handled the remaster of that game (let’s not forget the Comic Sans Silent Hill Ranch sign), many agree that it was definitely easier on the eyes in many ways. The Silent Hill 2 HD Collection mod can be found at this link.
First Person Mod
My personal favorite of all the available mods is the First Person Mod. Sure, I love seeing James’ dirty jacket everywhere I go, but I think the Silent Hill 2 remake would thrive on having this feature available as part of the game. As you’d imagine, the mod allows you to experience Silent Hill 2 directly from James’ point of view.
Unfortunately, the mod comes at the expense of James’ character model being invisible so that he doesn’t appear in the frame. However, that also means that James is invisible during cutscenes. It can make fights and puzzles a little more creepy, but that’s the whole point of Silent Hill. Players can install the First Person Mod for Silent Hill 2 remake here.
Silent Hill 2 is available to play on PlayStation and PC.
