When the first trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog Movie came out in February fans lost their collective minds. The design of Sonic did not go down well at all, you literally couldn’t move on the internet without seeing a meme or a good old fashioned moan. With good reason too, Sonic looked ridiculous and quite scary. I still wake up in cold sweats after dreaming about those legs.
Turns out though that if you moan on the internet enough you might actually get listened to, especially if the people you’re moaning at are worried for their bank balances. Originally, due to release this November the Sonic the Hedgehog Movie was pushed back to February next year to enable Sonic to look a bit more pleasing to his ardent fans.
Producer Tim Miller has now said that fans will be pleased with the new look Sonic. Miller spoke to the folks over at Variety and had this to say:
“This is a franchise, and it has to be great. Look, I was with fans and so was Jeff. When the s–t hit the fan, I went over there and said, “The most important thing to do, man, is say, ‘I f–ked up,’” He’d already sent a tweet out an hour before I got there. He’s a good man. It was exactly the right way to handle that. The fans have a voice in this too. There’s a right way to listen.”
Having seen the new designs Miller thinks the fans will be pleased.
I’ll reserve judgment until we actually get to see them and I’ll go into the film with an open mind. Some fans won’t agree with me, but I think Jim Carey looks great as Robotnik / Eggman and he should bring his classic style to the role.
We can all agree that the first design for Sonic was abysmal, but it’s good that someone took notice and made some changes, regardless of the reason. Let’s hope the initial farce hasn’t put too many people off this movie before it has even been released and reviewed.
It could still be terrible, let’s see. We should at least give Sonic the benefit of the doubt, for now. It’s what the little blue mascot deserves. After all, when has he ever let us down before?
