Edgar Wright’s new film, Last Night in Soho, has received a US release date. The film will release on September 25th, 2020.
No news on a UK release date, but the feature is in the hands of Universal in the UK and should release pretty close to the above mentioned US release.
A Departure for Wright
The film is quite the depart from Wright’s previous outings. Known for his sense of humor and seamless editing, this time it seems that he is taking a more serious tone.
According to Empire, the film:
“is described as a psychological horror set in the titular London district. Set pictures have shown Smith, Taylor-Joy and others clad in period garb with 1960s vehicles, so at least some of the film, if not all, appears to take place in the past.”
So, the impression is that this movie may be a period horror. This is an interesting move for Wright, but it seems that his excess of style and clear direction would be perfect for a film of this nature.
The currently known cast are high caliber. Anya Taylor-Joy, Diana Rigg, Matt Smith, Terence Stamp, amongst others will appearing in the new feature. Wright’s casting of Taylor-Joy is an excellent choice for the film as we have seen her rise in the ranks of the horror scene with movies like The Witch and Split.
Last Night in Soho is currently filming, with a screenplay from Krysty Wilson-Cairns and Wright himself.
As we buckle in for the long haul, eagerly awaiting the day we can witness Wright’s idea of serious horror, I am reminded of Shaun of the Dead.
We’ve seen him take on a genre of horror before and the result was a British classic. Can he do it again with this departure from comedy? I certainly think so!
