Morbius, the Living Vampire will have his own comic book series this November.

Announced on Marvel’s website, the Spider-Man villain is getting his own solo book a year before his movie debut on July 31, 2019.

The series will be penned by Vita Ayala, who has written for a range of publications including Black Mask Studios, Dynamite, DC Comics and, of course, Marvel.

Drawing Morbius is Marcelo Ferreira, who has worked on such comics as IDW’s Back to the Future and Call of Duty: Black Ops III for Dark Horse.

The blurb for the first issue of Morbius reads:

For years, Nobel Prize winning biologist Michael Morbius has been struggling to cure himself of his vampirism, and now, for the first time in years, one may be within reach! But the path to it is littered with dangers and worse!

The character was originally conceived by writer Roy Thomas and artist Gil Kane in the 101st issue of The Amazing Spider-Man in 1971. While initially a villain for the web-slinger, Morbius grew to become a three-dimensional, fan-favorite character in the greater Marvel Universe.

Although his first live-action portrayal will be by Jared Leto in the upcoming film, this isn’t Morbius’s first adaptation on-screen. Notable commendation goes to 1994’s Spider-Man: The Animated Series, where he was voiced by Nick Jameson. The aforementioned series is innovative in that it took the wallcrawler and his villains seriously narrative-wise. However, the kid-friendly audience meant that the writers had to replace Morbius’s thirst for blood with ‘plasma’.

The Morbius movie is going to be the first of a trilogy and part of ‘Sony’s Marvel Universe‘. Said universe is home to Tom Hardy’s Venom and a potential slew of future films and classic characters.

Will you read the Morbius comic book to prepare for the movie? Let us know in the comments below!
