Even though it is confirmed that Microsoft will officially release Windows 10 on July 29, that didn’t stop Windows 7 from drastically diminishing its popularity. Recent reports suggests that Windows 7 is still on the top of OS market share, while Windows 8.1 is growing steadily on the chart.
According to StatCounter’s OS market share report from May 2014 to May 2015, Windows 7 has over 50 per cent market share. This showed that Windows 7 is currently the most widely used OS, far ahead compared to other OS’ on the market.
As cited by TheRegister, several changes in the data were recorded during the period of one year on the chart. One of which showed Windows 7 had a slight drop from 53.81% to 53.1%, whereas Windows 8.1 had 0.24% rise and 15.99% market share.
When compared with other OS’, Windows 8.1 is on the top of Windows XP’s 10.54%, followed by Mac OS which is 0.03% behind Windows XP. Windows 8.1 has showed significant improvement on the chart compared to when it was in May 2014.
The reason behind Windows 8.1’s increase market share are plausibly due to Microsoft’s announcement on giving free upgrade for anyone who owns Windows 8.1.
From TheRegister, this data is predicted to change drastically when Windows 10 seen the light of the day on July 29. It is widely believed that Windows 7 can maintain its position on the chart because its users dislike the trademark square design of Windows 8.
With the release of Windows 10 fast approaching and the OS’ approach to go back to conventional desktop and navigational design, it’s not impossible for majority of Windows 7 users to upgrade to Windows 10. Therefore, August’s market share report are the one to watch when it’s released.
