We all thought we had awoken from the dream and escaped The Matrix. But we are still plugged in.
A fourth installment in the beloved sci-fi action series, The Matrix, is set to begin production in 2020. Produced by Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures, the film will be written and directed by Lana Wachowski. You may remember her as the writer of the original Matrix trilogy. Wachowski has also worked on the stunning film adaptations of Cloud Atlas, and V for Vendetta. It’s safe to say that we can expect a truly spectacular film.
Matrix 4 Saw Production Roadblocks
The original Matrix trilogy is time-honored and loved by fans. As a result, the trilogy is estimated to have grossed over $1.6 billion since its inception in 1999. Evidently, Warner Bros. has been searching for a portal back into The Matrix for years. Unfortunately, the continuation of the series has been held up by disputes over producing rights.
However, in this, the year of the 20th anniversary of the original Matrix film, all the pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place.
Some Stars Return, Others May Not
An opportunity to double down on production efforts is being seized by the studio. Matrix stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss have been contacted.
Even in the face of production for John Wick 4, Reeves has agreed to work on this fourth installment of The Matrix. The two have confirmed their availability for the film, agreeing to reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively.
As of yet, there is no film synopsis publicly available. As such, the plot of the film is left entirely up to our speculation at this point in time, along with many other details.
Some sources say that the role of Morpheus will be given to a younger face in place of Lawrence Fishburne. This may spark mixed reactions from the audience because of Fishburne’s much-loved performance in the original trilogy.
