With the recent clashes between Sony and Disney, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has been untimely ripped from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This was followed by the ‘important news’ that Tom Holland has unfollowed Sony on Instagram. It seemed like Spider-Man 3 (no. 2) had been dropped completely. Which could have led on to the fourth Sony reboot of the franchise. But luckily, it’s clear that Sony is confident in leading the franchise without Disney or the rest of the MCU, in making two more Tom Holland starred web-slinging titles. But that’s not the interesting part.

Same Spider-Man Script, Different Marvel Universe?

The Spider-Man: Far from Home screenwriters are still working on the script for the third installment in the franchise. This could mean, despite being now ‘outside’ MCU, that references to characters like Tony Stark (who played and still holds a very important role in Peter Parker’s character arc), could still be made. The entire MCU being ignored would be quite unlikely. Though, ignoring speculation for a minute, it’s evident (via CBR) that the screenwriters haven’t given up on the MCU trilogy.

Spider Man

This gives us fans into some of the workings of the industry. There’s no way a group of writers would waste their time on a feature-length screenplay. Therefore they must think there’s a high chance that the MCU orientated Spider-Man franchise. They may even know, that it’s going to continue, with Sony bluffing to maneuver Disney into a position they want.

It would be ridiculous if the franchise didn’t continue. That means hundreds of millions of dollars would be lost for Sony and Disney. It would also disappoint millions of MCU and Spider-Man fans. Plus, without any MCU crossover or reference, the Spider-Man story arc would make a lot less sense; especially as the last two films were so MCU orientated. To alter the Universe of a series of films midway through, could ruin the franchise. Not just of Spider-Man, but the MCU could be hit hard, now without the new face of the Avengers.

Sony is probably bluffing in saying that they can continue the franchise to get a better deal out of Disney. And the writers know that. Which is, hopefully, why they’re still writing despite Sony and Disney splitting. For more on Disney and the MCU, stay tuned to The Nerd Stash.
