Star Trek: Picard Premieres January 23, 2020
This article is over 5 years old and may contain outdated information.

There is a constant argument over the ‘best’ captain from all the Star Trek properties. While ‘best’ is subjective, one of the most well-liked captains is returning. Trekkies and casual fans alike can rejoice, they will be seeing more of Jean Luc Picard. CBS All Access will be premiering a solo series called Star Trek: Picard. CBS revealed a release date at New York Comic Con as well as a new trailer. Picard will air on January 23, 2020, on the streaming service as well as on Amazon Prime in the UK. The series will air the first season every Thursday for the full 10 episode run. Now, it’s possible this show will alienate casual fans, but Jean Luc will have them cheering for him soon enough.

The trailers alone are enough to get serious fans interested. With a host of cameos from multiple Star Trek shows, most fans will swoon. The second trailer shows us an updated look at Riker and Deanna, not to mention Seven of Nine. There is even a glimpse of Data in this trailer, showing fans Picard has not forgotten him. The story follows Picard as he takes steps away from following Starfleet. This is a new experience for him, and not one he enters lightly. With Seven of Nine entering into the mix, fan-favorite Jeri Ryan returns to Star Trek. Ryan expressed some difficulty returning to her character’s voice for the role. But she also had some help from another returning Borg actor, Johnathan Del Arco. Star Trek: Picard will be a cavalcade of cameos if these trailers tell us anything.

Whether or not Picard will offer any explanation at first remains to be seen. But the mysteries we’ve experienced with Jean Luc in the past make fans eager to return. It’s clear that no matter which Captain is your favorite, Picard is always popular. CBS also released a trailer for the upcoming season of Star Trek: Discovery. CBS All Access viewers will be the first to see Picard return to the small screen this January. But Trekkies will have even more new shows available soon enough.
