Game of Thrones fans have had one roller coaster of a day. Earlier today, fans of the fantasy epic were upset by the news that HBO was canceling the prequel focusing on the Long Night. However, the studio was quick to announce that the prequel focusing on the Targaryen line, House of the Dragon, is now officially a go!

Taking place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon will focus on the Targaryen line and how they came to power in Westeros. Inspired by George R.R. Martin’s prequel novel, Fire & Blood, the show will cover at least 140 years of history beginning with Aegon the Conqueror, but the finer details are still up in the air.

Thankfully, Martin will co-create the series, which has already been approved for ten episodes in its first season. Along with Martin, Ryan Condal will be acting as showrunner alongside Miguel Sapochnik. Sapochnik is no stranger to Westeros and the line of dragon rulers as he directed some of the best Game of Thrones episodes to date, like “Battle of the Bastards.”

Game of Thrones

The news of House of the Dragon‘s green light comes on the tail end of some sad news. One of the many spin-off ideas took place thousands of years before the original show and focused on the Long Night, the first war between men and the White Walkers. Big names like Naomi Watts and Kingsmen writer Jane Goldman were already on board, but it seems as if HBO has decided to pass on the pilot.

While an official reason has yet to be given for the cancellation, reports have indicated that issues in filming and post-production may have contributed. That being said, there are still other Game of Thrones prequels in the works that we don’t know about.

Upset about the Long Night series getting passed over? Or are you (like me) eager to see the Targaryen’s get a second chance at a worthy finale? Let us know in the comments below, and keep coming back to The Nerd Stash for all of your nerdy news and needs!
