The Witcher is undoubtedly one of the most highly-anticipated series Netflix has had in quite some time. Turns out, the streaming platform is pretty confident in the upcoming show as a second season has already been announced. The second season will arrive in 2021.

This announcement should come as no surprise. The trailers have been a hit on YouTube and with Superman star Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, it’s safe to say that Netflix is putting a lot of effort into adapting The Witcher franchise to the small screen. This includes showrunner Lauren Hissrich, who recently sat down with SFX Magazine (via PCGamesN) and revealed that they have planned out seven seasons of the show:

“I’ve [mapped out stories] for seven seasons. Right now it’s just about, ‘how do you set up stories that really capture audiences for years at a time?’”

Judging from the trailers so far, it seems that the show, based on the beloved novels of the same name, is hoping to attract the Game of Thrones fanbase who either felt betrayed by the HBO series’ final season or are still looking to get into another epic fantasy series. Only time will tell if The Witcher is that show for Netflix.

One thing we do know is that The Witcher will focus more on the horror aspect of things opposed to just straight-up fantasy. Visual Effects Supervisor Julian Parry said as much during an interview with SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar):

“I definitely think it leans more towards horror. We’re definitely taking the fantasy out. I can honestly say we’re not fantastical. I mean, it’s fantastical but in a grounded horror sense. For example, with Striga [a woman cursed to live as a monster], that’s one gnarly-looking thing. That’s very unpleasant!”
