Star Trek: Picard has been generating a lot of buzz since its initial announcement. Trekkies everywhere are waiting eagerly for the series premiere airing January 23 on CBS All Access. Now, it appears that all the positive hype for the new series has caught the attention of CBS executives. On Sunday evening, the network announced that it had renewed Star Trek: Picard for a second season.

Star Trek: Picard and Patrick Stewart’s Reprisal of Jean-Luc Picard

Julie McNamara, Executive Vice President of Original Content for CBS All Access revealed the good news during the Television Critics Association presentation.

โ€œThe energy and excitement around the premiere of Star Trek: Picardย has reached a magnitude greater than all of us at CBS All Access could have hoped for,โ€ said McNamara. โ€œWeโ€™re thrilled to announce plans for a second season before the seriesโ€™ debut, and we are confident that โ€˜Star Trekโ€™ fans and new viewers alike will be captured by the stellar cast and creative teamโ€™s meticulously crafted story when it premieres on Jan. 23.โ€

At the start of the new series, Jean Luc-Picard is living a lonely retirement on a French vineyard estate. Furthermore, a past event that took place sometime after Star Trek: The Next Generation now haunts him. Patrick Stewart says that the event involves a Romulan refugee rescue mission that went awry. When a young girl enters his life, Picard sets off on a new adventure.

The series will also explore the 20-year gap between The Next Generation and Picard. Patrick Stewart is excited to reprise the role of Jean Luc-Picard. He is excited to explore the next stage of the character’s life, though admits he will hardly be in uniform. Brent Spiner, Martha Sirtis, and Jonathan Frakes will appear during the first season, which is ten episodes long.
