Amazon Prime Video released the first trailer for its upcoming sci-fi show Tales From the Loop. Based on paintings of the Swedish countryside by Simon Stålenhag, the show takes place in an alternate universe in the 1980s.
In 1954, the Swedish government ordered the construction of the world’s largest particle accelerator. The facility was complete in 1969, located deep below the pastoral countryside of Mälaröarna. The local population called this marvel of technology The Loop.”
Tales From the Loop is also a wonderful tabletop roleplaying game developed by Free League and published by Modiphius Entertainment.
Similar to Netflix’s Stranger Things, only in that the main characters are teenagers living in the 80s instead of the 70s, the game sees players working to solve mysteries in the world. Weird and futuristic robots wander the landscape along with alien creatures and men in black.
The trailer, meanwhile, is serene and peaceful. Images from the reveal are pulled straight from Stålenhag‘s works of art and set the scene for the creepy and unsettling story that we’re sure will unfold at some point or another during the course of the season.
The landscape was full of machines and scrap metal connected to the facility in one way or another. Always present on the horizon were the colossal cooling towers, with their green obstruction lights. If you put your ear to the ground, you could hear the heartbeat of the Loop – the purring of the Gravitron, the central piece of engineering magic that was the focus of the Loop’s experiments. The facility was the largest of its kind in the world, and it was said that its forces could bend space-time itself.”
The show is being produced by Matt Reeves (The Batman) with music from composer Philip Glass.
Tales From the Loop premieres April 3 on Prime Video.
